DJ's for the evening:

Terry Mullan (Chicago)

Being a fan of music sometimes means nothing else matters. This is true to life for Chicago's Terry Mullan. His ears were alert at the right time, if house music is your thing. Right smack in the middle of the blossoming house development of Chicago during the mid 80's, at an early age, Terry was already in tune with what was actually happening.

Although his roots began in hip-hop, Terry found himself smack in the middle of the Chicago house explosion. House and Disco were styles of music that were entirely new to Terry, but the match was struck. Faithfully listening and recording the then burgeoning Chicago airwaves, his nights during middle school were filled with the finest in Chicago house. DJ's like Farley Jackmaster funk, Fast Eddie, Armando, & Mike "Hitman" Wilson, via 102.7 WBMX. His mix tape collection fast became a fixture within his bedroom, constantly taping the shows, studying them. Some called it simulcasted education.

Soon after the house scene was all grown up, entered the acid house sound. Here Terry really found solace. It was that added flavor he was waiting for, something new, twisted, and forward. Now all the elements were coming together. And with the addition of the Detroit sound, this was it, three different languages, disco, house, and techno. They could all translate the same message together or apart from one another. This is how Terry is like a translator. With his fluent style, these languages reflect his DJ'ing as well as the tracks he's now composing, which is his way of furthering the evolution of dance music.

For the future, Terry is going beyond just knowing his machines. This sound is put to the test on his releases on Robsoul, Funk'd, CHC, Aciiieeed, Kontrast, and on his own imprint Catalyst Recordings. Through his label he has released projects for the likes of DJ Sneak, Ian Pooley, Halo Varga, Mazi, Bryan Zentz, Angel Alanis, & TJR, as well as for himself under the monikers, Acid OG's, Speakerphreaker, Tone Broke, and as Serotonin Project on Richie Hawtin and John Acquaviva's former imprint Definitive which featured Terry's track ' Sidewinder' on the Chemical Brothers 'Brother's Gonna' Work It Out' Mix CD. Additionally, Terry gained notoriety for his records under the alias Speakerphreaker which includes the largely successful 'Products Of Our Environment' EP on Catalyst which was featured on Pete Tong's Essential Selection on BBC Radio 1 in the UK & "La Nina/Nickel Bag Da Funk" EP on Smile which was licensed to several top DJ mix compilations. (Terry Mullan & Halo Varga collaboration).

Terry's DJing, label, and trax have earned him a reputation that extends worldwide. Never one to follow the masses, he borrowed from each genre to create what we all know to be Terry's sound, putting a bad ass twist on an otherwise conservative house scene.

Dj Dig-Dug (Seattle)

Douglas McIntyre purchased his first set of turntables in late 1995. Time would prove this to be the best investment he has made to date. He spent the majority of the following 6 months in his bedroom. First perfecting the technical fundamentals, and later developing a personalized DJ style. His natural talent was immediately recognized by Portland’s underground dance music scene, and Dig-Dug began performing at house parties in the area. He made his official debut at a large-scale event on April 20th, 1996 in Portland, OR for U.S.A. Productions. After this extraordinary first impression, he began playing out regularly in several Oregon cities. At this time Doug made a long-lasting decision to set off on a quest. His quest was simple: as a DJ/producer he would expose as many individuals as possible to the power of breakbeats. That same year, Doug graduated from high school and moved to Eugene, OR. While there he studied electronic music production and music theory at Lane Community College.

In 1997, Doug came across his first speed garage record and was
immediately addicted to this new sound. He gained inspiration from DJ Czech (Vancouver, BC), who educated him on the genre. Doug's refusal to abandon his breakbeat quest led him to the unique and clever combination of speed garage and bassline-heavy breaks that soon became his signature sound.

Doug's ultimate love for breakbeats fueled his desire to spend some time in Florida. And in early 1998 (February - May), that's exactly where he went. While there he attended the Winter Music Conference and studied electronic music production under Defcon 6 (aka DJ Hipp-e and Red Void). Together, the three produced a breakbeat track named “Innerscape". The single was remixed by DJ X-travagant, who released both versions on his Miami-based label, Platinum Groove Ent. Although his time in Florida whad been extremely beneficial, Doug knew he had unfinished business to tend to in the Northwest.

Upon his return to Portland, Doug focused his attention back toward his DJ career. That following Halloween would mark Dig-Dug's first performance for United State of Consciousness (Freak Night II). A few months later he relocated to Seattle to work behind the scenes in the USC office. In his time as an employee with the company, Doug would prove to be a vital link between USC Productions and the Oregon electronic music community. His strong desires to bring some of the talent back to the city that gave birth to his DJ career led to several successful and ground-breaking USC events in Portland. While residing in Seattle, he held down a weekly residency on www.groovetech.com and released his most popular mixed tape to date; "Game Over". The release helped him branch out, and he began performing frequently in British Columbia as well as Idaho. He remained an integral part of all USC events through the end of Freak Night 2000, at which time Doug made the decision to return to school and pursue an education centered
around his true passion; music.

Doug spent the next 14 months completing an intense Sound Engineering program at Ex'pression Center for New Media in Emeryville, California. Amazingly, his rigorous 40+ hour school weeks didn’t slow down his DJ Career one bit. Dig-Dug continued to take bookings on the weekends, often requiring him to fly back just in time for class! He utilized much of this newfound recording knowledge in the creation of his most recent demo CD, "Dig this!". Incredibly well received, this release helped him solidify strong followings in California, Nevada, and Utah.

So the stage is set: He's back in Seattle, he's an employee and resident DJ for USC, he's sponsored by three Los Angeles based clothing lines (Psyche 909, ODO, Octo), he's received his Sound Engineering degree from a highly regarded multimedia institution, and his weekends are filled with bookings up and down the West Coast. His latest track, “Crowd Control” featuring lyrics by DJ Swamp (currently available on the USC6 compilation CD) is further proof that his extensive technical training and creative ideas set him apart from the rest. The future looks bright for this DJ/Producer/Sound Engineer, and one thing is certain... his quest goes on.

Dragn'fly (Sacramento)

THE GENESIS

Although an avid fan of the San Francisco underground rave scene since 1991, it wasn't until her attendance at a highly overcrowded event in 1998 that Dina Lammon found herself trapped in front of a team of battling DJs. For the first time, she witnessed the way a DJ could use music and machine to manipulate flesh. It was an eye opening experience and the event filled her with a sense of musical rapture. It was an eye opening experience and the event filled her with a sense of musical rapture and a new life path was revealed.

THE EVOLUTION

Since that fateful night, Dragn'fly has evolved into one of the most highly demanded and respected DJs in the western United States. A classically trained musician since the age of 8, it didn't take long for Dragn'fly to gain a solid feel of the decks and within a few months she was performing in front of hundreds of raging fans alongside SF-legend, Astral Matrix. The experience was hailed as an unforgettable one by the hundreds of raging fans in attendance and it marked a turning point in the career path of our heroine. Today Dragn'fly has a performance history that boasts over 700 major events throughout California, Washington, Nevada, Louisiana, Mississippi, Ohio, Wyoming Nebraska, New York and Hawaii! On an International level; she has also been contracted for events as far as Cuernavaca Morelos, Mexico, Brazil and Germany.

THE ESSENCE

Known as a true "journey DJ", Dragn'fly possesses an almost uncanny ability to read and rock any crowd and the diversity of each set performed has provided Dragn'fly with the opportunity to play top slots alongside a diverse list of world-renowned talent ranging from Paul Oakenfold, Timo Maas to hard house titans Jon Doe, Chris C, DJ Irene, and even DnB legends AK1200 and Aphrodite, along with many many more... (You can track her past view flyers by clicking this link.)

Dragn'fly couples a refreshing blend of progressively hard banging tech-trance with an aggressive-as-hell" mixing style and the result is a sound that is uniquely hers. The combination showcases a near frenzy of sound manipulation while she tweaks her EQ's and shreds her vinyl, watching as her dancers rise and fall to ecstatic pieces on the dance floor. With each set, she takes her dancers on a journey through darkness and light with her sense of passion, energy and magnetism - qualities that consistently transform a room of people into a sea of whirling appendages and frothing activity: qualities that make them feel like they are truly alive.

THE IMMINENCE

Dragn'fly's unique story and abilities have made her the object of several print and web zines and she's even infiltrated Hollywood in 2004 as a featured artist for Higher Decibel, a television show that highlighted some of the world's most distinguished DJs. Dragn'fly currently holds residencies with such esteemed productions crews as Shaolin of Sacramento, California and Lovetribe of Seattle, Washington. In addition, she has appeared numerous times at such Bay Area nightspots as 1015 Folsom, Mezzanine, and Paradise Lounge - and has repeatedly made headlining appearances at Qool Saturdays and the Looq Happy Hour hosted by one of America's top progressive record labels, Looq Records. And if an average of 2 - 4 appearances a week weren't enough, Dragn'fly has found the time to release 10 promotional mix CDs - most of them live recordings from featured events. Accordingly, one of her CDs, Dragn'fly presents Legacy of Kain, was released privately in 2001 by computer-gaming giant Eidos Interactive for the official premieres of Sony Playstation 2: Soul Reaver 2 and Blood Omen 2. Having reached such regions as South Africa, Russia, Scotland, Austria, Iceland, Canada, the Dominican Republic, Australia, Japan, Sweden, Ireland, France, and England - it can be said that this is Dragn'fly's most widely distributed piece of work yet and has earned her devoted fans on a worldwide basis. It's hard to say what the future will bring, but one thing is certain: the sound of Dragn'fly is destined to be an instrumental force in helping to bring electronic dance music to a new level.
