After chatting with some friends about there being so many
dance events to choose from, and the fact that with so many
places, it's difficult to keep a sense of community from being
diluted into the vast Bay Area scene, SFDance Shout was born.
We didn't want people who were new to the scene to learn the
hard way that not all dance scenes are created equal,
and that's a good thing.

Friends told friends who told friends....
The SFDance Shout is the largest read dance newsletter in SF!

SFDance is dedicated to preserving dance music culture in
San Francisco and helping to provide information to the public
on dance music.

A Week in Review

I entered the Greek Theatre on Friday night and climbed
to the top of a hill to listen to Jill Scott. Looking out at
the lights of Berkeley I watched the colored lights that were shining on the columns behind the stage. Jill Scott sang about love, heartbreak, heritage, and inner strength.

"Brother, don't let nobody hold you back... ", she voiced as the crowd cheered. Jill would sing and dance on the stage while talking in a poetic voice. She often would give out wisdom within the music. "We always have the best intentions even if they don't work out...", she said as her song touched the listeners' souls.

Lifting the energy of the crowd and weaving her words through the outdoor amphitheater, Jill sang,
"There's just me, one is the magic #."
She was referring to how important it is to not lose self.
In another song she discussed revolution, and how "we are the ones to make change." Powerful words within powerful music...

Even though Jill had been traveling for two weeks performing before the show, she sang a final song while in tears after the crowd urged her back onto the stage. "Thank you so much", she said, "it is so cold out, and you are still here. I will never forget this!"

"God did not design love to have stipulation". - Jill Scott

Who Is Jill Scott?:
Words and Sounds

"She combines a beautiful voice with an extreme generosity of spirit, making her music a dreamy, soulful delight"

Featured Dj: Dj Dragn'fly

I first met Dragn'fly several months ago while she was spinning at a performance at Rise. Her variety and "hard bass" cause people to shift and meld into the music. Her listeners become alert, aware, and often cheer as she builds them up and takes them on a musical journey. Although known for trance, her diverse sets cross many musical categories. Its the variety of sounds that she mixes that bring a crowd alive.
And... she NEVER spins the same set twice!

Listen to Dj Dragn'fly on

You can also hear her co-hosting the new "Radio Teknique" online broadcasting show on Tuesdays.

You can learn more about Dragn'fly at

This list is about finding places to dance, and not pick-up scenes.
Although we recognize the sexual energy abound in the dance scene,
we encourage you to go out for the sake of the music,
not to cruise to use. The same with substances, there are definitely
some things that can add spice to life, but SFDance is about
the vibe and energy, not a place to score. Meow?

The SFDance Shout is brought to you by SFDance.

About SFDance: SFDance is a group that encourages the community
through dance music. SFDance is dedicated to preserving dance music culture in San Francisco and helping to provide information to the public on dance music. SFDance supports local promoters, Djs, clubs, and the SF Dance community.

Dance Tip!
How to make your own energy bars

SFDance Energy Bar

Makes 12 - ~2oz. Squares See commercial bar comparisons below
(thanks to Bonnie for help with this recipe)

Non-wheat eaters substitute brown rice flour and a non-reactive multi-grain mix for the blended cereal.

½ cup oil substitute
( try to find something made from pureed fruit)
1 cup Fructose Sugar
( Twice as sweet as regular sugar. According to the
diabetic packaging--Fructose causes significantly lower rise in bloodsugar
because most fructose is absorbed with only a small amount changed into
glucose. )

2Tbl Molasses
( gives the recipe its brown sugar flavor)
4 egg whites
1 tsp. Vanilla
2 cups 10 grain cereal, ground in blender
2 cups unbleached flour
½ tsp. salt
1 tsp. baking powder

¼ cup cocoa powder (optional)

Nutritional equivalent totals* per square
291 calories, 2 grams fat, 63 grams carbo, 7 grams protein

*Pseudo-scientific values using volume equivalents of nutritional information taken from product labels

Cooking instructions:
Prep: Heat oven to 350 degrees. Use a regular kitchen blender grind
10-grain cereal, one cup at a time. Set aside, the cereal will still be very textured.

In a Kitchen Aid type mixer, “cream” oil substitute puree (3/4 c. smashed bananas, which gives a slight banana flavor, also seem to
work), fructose sugar, "full
flavor" molasses, and egg whites. Add vanilla just before the next step.

In a separate bowl combine flours, baking powder, salt, and optional cocoa
powder. Slowly add mixed dry ingredients to the liquid mix which becomes
very, very, thick and sticky when combined.

Add chocolate chips if desired!

Spread very sticky mixture evenly into a prepared (greased or oil-free
spray) 9X13 pan and bake. Bake 25-30 minutes.
While still warm, cut into
12 equal size squares.
